Qube Gallery is proud to present “New Chapter”, a solo exhibition by Zaldy Garra
6 September 2022
at the High Space of Qube Gallery
Crossroads, Banilad
REREADING THE PICTURESQUE THROUGH PERSONAL NARRATIVES
Despite the underlying trend early in the 21st century to develop expedient tropes of form in an age of digital anonymity, classical portrait artists refuse to disappear in the annals of art history. To understand how figuration persists, we must absorb ourselves in the narratives of the painter.
Garra offers in this second solo exhibit an elaborate, almost obsessive treatment of folds and creases, referring directly to the instruction given him in art school. He was made to paint crumpled pieces of paper as a form of reality. The gashes of a tattered shoe were considered as visually attractive as cloud formations.
We apprehend beheaded torsos against buoyant vaporous masses and pretentious striped patterns. Whether these curious juxtapositions come from the hypnagogic existence of a solitary painter, Garra appears to have turned a new leaf over, working in a more colorful and deliberate manner than he did pre-pandemic.
Outrightly self-referential, Garra muses on the manipulation of personal typologies on canvas to expose the picturesque. His personal narratives provide gleeful accidents that look into the nature of what is aesthetically ideal in between what is beautiful and sublime.
